Specialist Programs

St Alipius is proud to offer a diverse specialist program that strengthens learning across the Victorian Curriculum.  Please see below for an outline of our Specialist program which includes music, Japanese, physical education, Science and S.T.E.A.M.

Music Program

St Alipius is proud to offer a dynamic and enriching music program housed in our state-of-the-art music facility. Aligned with the Victorian curriculum, our program is designed to cultivate a deep appreciation for music while fostering the development of essential musical skills. Students engage in a diverse range of activities, including instrumental instruction, vocal training, and collaborative ensemble performances. The new music facility provides a dedicated space equipped with modern technology and resources, enhancing the overall learning experience.

Our music curriculum integrates key elements such as exploring, responding, creating, and performing, allowing students to develop a well-rounded musical literacy. Through this program, we aim to instil a lifelong love for music, nurture creativity, and empower students to express themselves through the universal language of sound.

From Year 2, students can choose to join the school choir which performs at a number of school and Ballarat community events. An optional Taiko drumming club provide opportunities for students who show interest and skills in these areas.

Japanese program

At St Alipius we explore our connection with Asia through learning about the Japanese culture and language.  Every student has a lesson in Japanese each week and learns the basic language of numbers, colours, greetings, food and festivals.

Yearly at St Alipius, we celebrate "Japan Day" - a student-led initiative where the younger students learn more about the culture of Japan by participating in workshops that are led by our Year 6 students.  This is a well-loved annual event at St Alipius that gives students an opportunity to showcase their learning in Japanese.

Physical Education

At St Alipius, we believe in the holistic development of our students, and our Physical Education (PE) program is a cornerstone of this commitment.  Our students engage in two 45-minute PE sessions each week, with one session led by our dedicated Specialist teacher and the other by their classroom teacher. The curriculum encompasses a wide range of activities aligned with the Victorian standards, focusing on fundamental motor skills, sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy lifestyle choices. These sessions provide a balanced and comprehensive approach to physical development, fostering not only physical fitness but also social and cognitive skills. With a variety of sports, games, and fitness activities, our PE program aims to develop a lifelong love for physical activity and well-being in our students.

Science

At St Alipius, our Science curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and critical thinking. Students actively engage in hands-on exploration, investigative experiments, and collaborative learning experiences that aim to cultivate a deep understanding of scientific concepts. Our 45 minute, weekly lessons integrate key elements from the Victorian Curriculum, emphasizing the importance of inquiry-based learning, scientific methods, and practical application.

Sustainability is a central focus, encouraging students to explore environmental science and develop an awareness of their role in fostering a sustainable future. By intertwining theory with real-world applications, our Science lessons at St Alipius aim to not only impart knowledge but also develop a sense of wonder and responsibility for the world around us.

S.T.E.A.M

In 2024, St Alipius proudly introduces our innovative 45-minute S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) lessons, thoughtfully crafted in adherence to the Victorian curriculum. These dynamic sessions offer a strong emphasis on the use of digital technologies to foster digital literacy and problem-solving skills. The curriculum encourages creativity and design thinking, challenging students to approach challenges through a multidisciplinary lens. These lessons not only align with the Victorian standards but also cultivate a collaborative and forward-thinking mindset, preparing our students for the complexities of the 21st-century world.
